hmmm "were" a quarrelsome lot...

I'd be surprised if the original Danny Boy was written in Irish given that it was written by an English Lawyer, but who knows..?

By the way, the translation there of the (maybe original) Irish lyrics takes a lot of liberties. I (no surprise) prefer the Irish version. I never liked Danny Boy, and I'd have associated it more with America than Ulster.

A fragment for you (from a poem on teh four provinces):
Ní liachtaí fuinthín ag fás ar fhaith
ná maighdean álainn is árd fhlaith
is gcriochaibh Ulaidh na lann mear,
na sciath, na n-each, 'sna na dtréin-fhear

Not rarer than flowers in a garden
are beautiful maidens and high princes
in Ulster of the quick blades,
the shields, the horses, and the strong men.

Sounds like ye were aye a quarrelsome lot!

LOL funny you should mention that. Taken from the OP: "Danny Boy is apparently one of 100+ songs composed to the same tune, the Londonderry Air."
There are many songs which share the tune, and tunes typically have many names.

But it's hard to avoid squabbles.
This might be of interest
Fights? The tune's the Londonderry Air, when song with the lyrics above, the song is Danny Boy.

Then again who am I to talk? Over here we spend our summers fighting over people walking down a road!

Dudes ( & beano)
I wish you could have heard the fights over ''Danny Boy" ( NO DEAR, it's "Londonderry Aire") during the Holidays, after all what are the Holidays without a good family war. Ahhhhh those were the times I miss. My poor Aunts thought they were green. But, my Mother, the Brat and the baby knew better............... at the top of her lungs. My poor father.

Danny Boy is a great song that should be kept away from any sort of official engagement. Johnny Cash did a good version of it on his final album.
