The problem is the laxity of the law compared to the gonzo punishments of the paramilitaries,
I know a few people whose families have been touched by members getting punishment beatings (in all incidents for trivial reasons, one of them was 15 and got both his elbows smashed) and even though in situations like this it might be perfectly natural to want to 'send in the boys' - you must remember that for the odd one like this how maybe does deserve a touch , theres going to be hundreds of kids who got it for nothing or at best reasons which are very far down the road from what the rest of the western world calls justice.
However the prison system is like half board hotels, did yous ever watch that 'bad lads army'? the rats on there all say ,every series, that "theyed rather be in prison" - and thats compared too a bit of crack on the telly......
sometimes ( I think) people can go so far as they forfeit their human rights, so why should you pay your tax pound to keep them in corn flakes and playstations?why dont we (society) use rats like this for medical reserch, get some good out of them , punish them and turn them from a disgrace into an asset that can be used to help those how are suffering
(and we could lay off the beagles - which would be nice)

I agree. Regardless of motivation, the attack was brutal and callous.

You know I hold relatively pro-peace views, but chemical castration sounds appropriate given the circumstances. Coupled with a hefty jail term in God-knows-where.

I know 'community justice' sounds appealing, but we're supposed to be moving away from that attitude. Let the law deal with it.

That's all well and good and maybe you're right about the motivation of the attackers but the motivation doesn't change what happened. Nor does it change the fact that what they subjected the poor girl (and her mum) to was inexcusable and disgusting. It certainly shouldn't alter his punishment.

Distressing story.

Without wishing to be too insensitive, when I first heard this story I thought that the English girl had somehow been known in the area and 'deserved' it. Just the way the story is presented.

English girl on holiday - in that part of Northern Ireland?

She did not meet the fellow teenagers she was hanging around with at some sort of leisure park/camp site/plush hotel.

Perhaps her relatives live in the area and they have form with the local scum. Some score to be settled.

It was odd (totally sick) of the guy who raped her to call her mum to 'inform' her of his acts towards her daughter. It gave rise to the possibility in my mind that perhaps the acts were some sort of retribution against her mother???

I don't mean to lessen the horrific attack, or detract from the experiences of such a young girl - scared for life I am sure - but these things stuck out in my mind.

I apologise if my comments appear to be in bad taste. I am just trying to cut beneath the headlines.

Its the same people who dispence street justice who have brutalised these communities to this extent where stuff like this goes on -we only know about this one as English people who live outside the paramilitary sphere of influence were able to get to the authorities.
The people who tramp tourists up the peace line should remember that just because they say paramilitary rule hasnt brutilised communties , that doesnt make it true and taking innocent strangers into these diseased districts is asking for troubles.
My most sincere sympathy to this poor girl.

In this one particular case I would say that "community justice" may be more appropriate than whatever pathetic sentence the legal system hands out
