Fair point, but if SF support the police they'd face less resistance from the overall nationalist community. If this means they can take a tougher line against nationalist rioters then they can also take the same tougher line against loyalist ones. As it stands hey may be able to take the tougher line with loyalists but would do so at the expense of facing accusations of bias since they show no desire nor ability to face down nationalist rioters.

If that makes any sense at all... :\

Nice idea but I don't see it flying. I think people in Northern Ireland are far too cynical about initiatives like these. Not to mention the fact that at the minute the SDLP and UUP both seem to have been given this image of being out of touch (rightly or wrongly isn't really relevant to this I don't think).

I think Con's right, only Sinn Fein can help stop this and they don't seem to have the will to help the police wrest their communities back from the thugs that dominate the streets at the moment.

Perhaps an NI version of the Guardian Angels would help, patroned by (say) the UUP and SDLP and with patrols drawn from both communities?

I mean this crowd, saw a bit of a program on TG4 last night

What indeed can be done about these thugs?
Since SF cannot break these fuckers legs anymore, there is a huge need for a police service that is fully ACCEPTABLE to all. As the representatives of the nationalist community, SF have to take the bull by the horns, get involved in local community policing, and get these shitkickers banged up.
Patten may not yet be implemented as fully as SF would like, but to leave the WHOLE community at the mercy of these animals is totally irresponsible. The many decent folk of areas like Ardoyne have enough to put up with without the antics of drunken Bandsmen/Celtic fans making life a misery for all concerned.
To attack a persons home simply because of the religion of that person is disgusting and needs to stamped out hard.

Your honesty is refreshing when it comes to your reaction to these stories. I think it's time to stop trying to figure out which side is rioting or attacking innocent people. Reasonable people in Northern Ireland should be apalled by the attacks regardless of the religions of the perpatrators or victims.

It's time for heavy pressure to be put on by decent folk on the police and their local politicians. What do you think can be done to sort out these thugs?

Looks like I was right not to jump immediately to conclusions. The BBC story has been updated to include Graffiti daubed on the wall of the house read: "Taigs out"

Still curious though why such an effort was made to identify the source/target in one story but not the other. Perhaps they just didn't have the details but you'd think given the situation here the journous would be fairly quick to find out.

"Of course I fully realise this may be simple paranoia on my part, but I thought it was worth pointing out"

Maybe, but it's something, I've also been wondering. What exactly is the criteria for classifying an attack as sectarian(or racist)? If a Protestant drug dealer living in a Catholic area(or vice-versa) has his house petrol-bombed-would it be assumed straight away that his religion was the reason for the attack?

BTW, whatever you do, if you value your sanity, keep out of the UTV comments section. It's overrun by sectarian commentators of both persuasions.
The BBC NI site on the other hand, seems to have become a restroom for the members of the SF Internet Police who aren't bright enough to be trusted to make comments on Slugger etc.
Both are a sad joke.
