Perhaps we will have to get this Executive up and running again in time to reverse these change. In the new Assembly the seats are such that Sinn Fein and SDLP would only get 4 of the 10 departments (2 each), with the rest going to unionists, so that is relatively advantageous. The government seems to have decided to make Direct Rule uncomfortable so it may be the best option now the IRA have decommissioned.

Referendum?

There was a "consultation" sent out by the Department of Education during Martin McGuinness's <del>dictatorship</del> time in charge there. He sent out unofficial ballot forms to every house in Northern Ireland (AFAIK) asking for the opinions of voting age adults there.

When he got back the result that something in the region of 2/3 people wanted to retain some form of academic selection he quickly swept the consultation under the rug and announced plans to continue regardless. I thought we'd be spared this mistake when Direct Rule was resumed almost immediately after this announcement, but I was naive. The Labour government seem determined to continue with Sinn Fein's plan to demolish Northern Ireland's education system.

Surely such a matter (the furure of our children) should be put to a referendum so people can decide for themselves ?
Its the peoples taxes which pay for the education system and i, for one, feel it should be left to them.
Failing that, if this blatant mistake is forced on Northern Ireland (its equally blatant , i feel, that the people of N.I. would reject the current English system, or at least those who have seen the inside of the average English school)
I honestly hope that there is provision enough in our community to publicly education every last one of our children, to our own standards.
