Ah, I was getting confused.

Ultacht is the body with the HQ in Belfast. FnaG has 1 in Dublin, 1 in Belfast. Also, apologies re the web address: when I checked yesterday I spelt it Gaelige. D'oh!
The headquarters is in Dublin - they took over from a previous 26 county body.

And I don't think they are that web savvy.

Besides http://www.gaeilge.org/ is gone - to the Gaelic League of New England.

And http://www.gaeilge.com seems to be a tourist webpage for waterford...

To be honest, even that web page demonstrates how politicised the language is, eg the .ie extension for a "North/South" body based in Belfast. It would have been cheaper and easier to register gaelige.org.

But there ya go. I'll have another read of that Ultacht site some time when I get broadband back at home - I waste too much time in work as it is!

I'm not trying to change your mind, simply to broaden it ;-).

Regretably, anything in Northern Ireland seems to get tangled in politics. And since the agency responsible for Irish Policy is a North South body, Northern Politics impacts on my life through Irish - which I was brought up speaking.

Thanks again! Had a read of the FAQs but really have to get back to work!!

I don't think it's changed my mind though - while I'd consider learning Irish for the cultural aspect, I think any statutory recognition as a 'working' language is misguided, particularly in Northern Ireland.

Thanks for the input aonghus, wasn't aware Chris McG spoke Gaelic - ya know what they say about learning something new..

I think "Dead leprechaun language" is a tad insensitive. Now I'm off to get my atlas out to find out where Wicklow is.

As a southern listener to RnaG, I am aware of more SDLP leaders who speak Irish than Sinn Fein ones; Bríd Rodgers, Séan Farren, Dominic Bradley,...

Not to mention Chris McGimpsey (UUP) and the journalist Ian Malcolm...

Very few Irish speakers in the south would see the language as belonging to any particular group, and certainly not to Sinn Féin.

I find the DUP claim that I speak a dead leprechaun language fits in the same category as the assumption that if one learns/speaks Irish one must naturally see the light and vote Sinn Féin.

But that is from the comfort of Wicklow....

Few protestants learn the language for the love of it, and I'm not against this... but sinn fein/ira seem to use the language to claim their irish-nessss... and therefore hi-jack it as THEIR language
