The 11+ is gone for good. Though I can still see a form of academic selection put in it's place. Caitríona Ruane hinted that a 11+ style test may be put in place at 14 instead of 11.

What is needed in this case is for the parties, (excluding the Alliance Party, who want to destroy segregated education), teachers, and parents to sit down and churn out a system that benefits everyone. The 11+ was too unfair to remain, but a removal of academic selection will be disaterous for the North's education.

"Sinn Fein sources acknowledge that such a vote will have to occur. But they add that the eleven plus is dead and buried so all parties must work together to create an alternative. If unionists try to re-introduce academic selection, Sinn Fein sources insist, they will find that nationalists use cross community voting to stop such a move in its tracks."

Personally, I reckon SF have concluded that Unionism will try to pull any proposal towards the 11+, so they are simply taking the toughest line now as a negotiating tactic. But we'll see.
