Seamus, depending on your degree subject you can leave university and go on to that sort of salary. That's not to say you're wrong that an apprenticeship is a better choice for some folk, just a point of information. If they studied art or media studies they deserve to be on a shit wage though!

Junkmale, I suspect there may be more than a hint of truth in the idea that grammar schools are worse for undervaluing trade-related skills.

I think a lot of this has to do with Grammer Schools.
I was unfortunate enough to go to a GS and i remember a Career's Advisor's reaction when i told her i wanted to be a Motor Mechanic (just like ma Da).
Going into enginering or manufacturing of any kind is not encouraged but is actively discouraged in the GS system.
Not that Ruane is right though (obviously). Allthough i do agree when her ideas (in principle).

I'm still an Apprentice so I get paid completely shit, but in September 2009 I go onto about £21 grand, while most my mates will just be finished university, with massive debt and not go onto as good a wage as I will be on.

You do have to feel sorry for those who were bitten by the university bug.

thats what you get when you let the egg heads set the agenda. Lol I am a Canadian tradesman and I make more money than most of my school friends who went to University.
