I think even if there was a real alternative in Ballymena they still wouldn't be voted for. Nothing matters more in North Antrim than the sectarian headcount - I think Paisley's continuous unchecked and resounding success is evidence of this.

Burned...? Now thats a thought, while i dont feel the D.U.P. have the right to dictate the contents of childrens books, i would defend their right to critise them, no matter how wacky the issue.But then i think your right in that they'ed most probably ban it (like their ideological arch-adversaries in the south banned Joyce....) given the chance.
But i think our frivolities hide a bigger issue, that the once proud town of Ballymena has been laid low by one of the worst drug problems in Ulster, but that the good people in Ballymena can rest assured their being pro-activly protected from this (clearly leathal) kiddies book. The D.U.P. are in power because there was no real alternative... (although theve been in Ballymena from the word go......) if they arse around with stuff like this to much ,given the way things stand,it'll be more farcical than even the worst ribbings we could dish out

ANNNNYWAY... to the original point I was making.. could any DUP supporters who happen across this post please explain how they feel to hear this sort of rant coming from one of their own? Would you like to see a Northern Ireland where books like Harry Potter were banned? (or burned?) What about the (blatantly awful, but nevertheless not ban-worthy) "Jerry Springer: The Musical" or the film 9 Songs which had Willy McCrea so up-in-arms?

Well I don't think it's sectarian because I've no reason to believe JK is even a nationalist, if anything the opposite.

I slag off Ballymena all the time - although no more or less so than somewhere like Fermanagh (the sticks) or Londonderry (spongers).

I still think the conveniences at the top of slemish was more of a dig at the DUP than Ballymena anyway lol. In fact that was the only piece of the post even remotely related to Ballymena so I think an "underlying theme" was a bit harsh.

Not everyone's out to get you

If anything, I think these are the sorts of stories that the Ulster Unionists should be keeping records of with a view to unearthing them in the run up to an election!!

well if i've showed a 'seige mentality' it wasn't the intention. Ballymena (im not from there) has often been referred to me as 'a black hole' ie full of black b,,,,,,,
the degrading charicatures of Ballymena are always (that i've seen) been aimed at its protestant residents- and a prominant one of these is that all the residents are buffons (its a great big shopping centre in Ballymena hie......)Given also that the remark "- at the town's newly opened public conveniences at the top of Slemish" was made in the context of a dup public meeting i see no reason to think that this remark is any different- i apologise to Mr. Rowling if i am wrong- however i think the fact that this was a ballymena man who made these remarks( Gillespie)was an underlying theme in his satirical post, you know in terms of fundamentalist hysteria i agree with what he says, but i think he unfairly attributed an indication of mental incompetence to the people of this town -this i feel was a sectarian generalisation.

Sectarian? A slight sense of paranoia creeping in here per chance paul? Nobody once mentioned the words Protestant or Catholic here - we're just joining together in having a go at a right wing religious nutcase and in JK's case, at the DUP.

I really am disappointed in some of the siege mentality displayed on this site at times. Everything has to be them and us!

to my mind the people of Ballymena have never been stupid enough to open
"public conveniences at the top of Slemish."-and if you want to talk about Ballymenas decline prehaps you should talk to the Dublin drug dealers who supply the town with its heroin....look i know this is a good excuse to slag the loopers who (unfortunatly) still find a voice with the dup - but try not to show yourself up as a degenerate bigot by imparting secterian digs at people just because of their town. sheep sÂ£$%gers have feelings to.

A children's fiction writer is urging parents to boycott the launch of the latest DUP policy document in the town next month.
JK Rowling (no relation) says the series of vote grabbing manifestoes amount to a "cult", and contain material totally unsuitable for young minds.
He is appealing to parents not to take their children to the special midnight unveiling on July 16 of the sixth instalment â€“ Ian Paisley and the Half-Baked Political Party - at the town's newly opened public conveniences at the top of Slemish.
Describing the specific location chosen for the launch as " suspicious", the author said people would do better to buy a copy of Viz.
"These cults with their stories about being outbred by Catholics are damaging, especially to young people who would be better off playing with their Playstation 2s," said Ms Rowling
