Talk Talk's 'free' broadband with your home phone!
As good as it sounds?

For many, yes! While 'free' is marketing twaddle, if you use/want broadband (and aren't locked in to another provider), Carphone Warehouse's £21/month package for all landline calls, broadband and line rental is likely to be unbeatable. The one main drawback is the lengthy 18 month contract.

View/Apply for the new tariff: Talk Talk* (the tariff needed is Talk 3 International Calls Option)
My provisional thoughts...

My overall view is this tariff will be a winner for many, especially as it is very likely you will be able to use it in conjunction with other cheap calls providers to cut the cost of calling mobiles and making other calls. Of course, it isn't without its problems, yet that's the same with most providers.

Therefore as the queue to get it is building up, you may want to Apply now*, then read the article about how to use it in conjunction with these providers next week.

WARNING! Not everything below is officially confirmed yet.

The following are my notes (and as such are in note form) so far, some may be a bit technical, but I know many MoneySavers are desperate for the information. If you don't understand it, don't worry the article next week will be written in a much easier style and will include full pros and cons.

Please beware, this info is not officially confirmed yet, as in some cases these include issues Talk Talk itself hadn't thought of, confirmation should come this week.
The Basics Of The Package

1. Cost. The Talk 3 International Calls Option costs £9.99 a month on top of the £11 monthly line rental (this is paid to Talk Talk direct so overall this package costs £21/month).

2. Free Calls. With this you get free calls at all times to landlines and to 24 international destinations (Europe, USA, Canada, Australia)

3. 'Free' Calls defined. The calls are only free for the first 70 minutes. So if you're going to talk longer put the phone down and redial to ensure you're not charged. Otherwise you'll be charged 3p/minute or more for the call.

4. Broadband included. This package comes with Broadband for which there's a £30 connection or transfer fee, it includes a modem for those who don't have one. The broadband isn't unlimited, it is a 40 Gb a month limit (this is a huge amount, normal limits are 2Gb, so its huge, in effect this is more than most 'unlimited providers' with fair use policies)

5. Broadband speed. The broadband speed is up to 8Mb (which is very fast) though to get this speed you need to be on an unbundled exchange. This is one where Talk Talk has installed its own equipment rather than relying on BT. Talk Talk is quickly upgrading those exchanges, but it could be up to a year for some. Those on non-upgraded (but planned to be upgraded) exchanges will get a slower speed until that point.

6. Who can get the broadband. This package is only available to 70% of the UK, which is those mainly in Urban areas, do check before signing up, otherwise you'll pay an extra £10/month and that makes it not cost effective. Those who can't get it are those at exchanges Talk Talk doesn't plan to unbundle.

7. Contract. You sign up for an 18 month contract with this. That's a long period and there's a £70 fine for changing. This means if the market place changes and another provider undercuts it, it won't be worth you moving.

8. Guaranteed Price. Carphone Warehouse is likely to guarantee no price changes to the package over the next 18 months.

9. Watch the 'security charge'. The broadband package comes with a free 90 day internet security option, after 90 days this will be charged at £1.75 a month automatically. Many people will have their own software to do this, or can get it cheaper, so watch out for this and cancel straight away.

10. Caller display is costly. Caller display is £1.50 a month, it's free on BT.

Using it with other cheap call providers

The standard MoneySaving calls solution is to use a cheap main provider, and then use other providers in conjunction with it to give you the cheapest price for any call. In this case while Talk Talk is free for landlines, it can be easily beaten by the cheap call providers (see www.moneysavingexpert.com/ukcallchecker) for calling mobiles.

So the question is, can it be used with these providers.

1. Prefix dial. For the prefix-dial providers such as 18866 or 18185, while initially you will be able to use them, once you are moved to an 'unbundled' exchange (in other words when you get the quick broadband speed as Talk Talk is supplying it itself) you will no longer be able to use them.

2. Normal dial overrides. However you should continue to be able to use the 0844 xxx xxx type override numbers, which still give cheap calls. The price should be the same as BT for these numbers, the only difference is if you are calling a specific 'local rate' 0845 number, then Talk Talk is 50% more expensive than BT, however if you put it in your 'Calling Circle' (analogous to BT's friends and family) then you will get it at a 30% discount.

There isn't a time limit as such becuase broadband is 'always on'.

But there is a 40Gig/month allowance which is also subject to a fair use policy. I don't know how they can apply a fair use policy on a hard cap like this, but you will be hard-pressed to use all this as I've heard they block p2p (and that probably goes for the sky film downloads too).

  • I think one thing to mention is Talktalk's port throttling. Although they don't really like to comment on it, talktalk to throttle certain ports at certain times of the day. This means that even though you are on an 8mb connection (which you will only get if you live right near the exchange, by the way), if you are downloading via P2P or BT, you won't see download speeds anywhere near what you should get. However, Talktalk do say that this does not apply to downloads running overnight. They say that they do this to allow normal internet browsing and emailing to take priority over downloading - in other words, they are making sure the network isn't clogged up by people downloading at max speed all the time. It is something worth considering when signing up for this deal, though. What's the point in having an 8mb connection when most of the time, you are limited on your speed. Also, consider the 40Gb cap per month. That means if you download over 40 gigs a month, you will be charged extra per gig. Obviously, this won't bother those who don't do lots of downloading. Then again, if you're not downloading, you don't need an 8mb connection anyway.

One thing, Martin - you say 40Gb is huge. It's very easy to pass that on an unthrottled 8mb connection. Another thing to consider is the financial value of an 18 month contract? Talktalk say this is free, yet tie you in for 1 and a half years. I would rather pay a different company for my broadband (Nildram, for example) and not be tied in.

For me, it turns out I'm in one of the areas that they will not predict any availability, so they propose a further £10 per month -
Unfortunately, because BT still controls your telephone exchange and we have to connect you through their equipment, we can't offer you broadband for free at this time. However, we can offer you high-speed broadband at the great price of just £10 per month, when you sign up to our Talk3 international calling plan.
    - still conditional on taking both packages, unfortunately. If they would split the offer in these circumstances, they might actually recruit more custom in these areas, as very few will see the £10 "free" calls package as such a bargain compared to cheap calls via 1899/18185.

In fact my ISP Pipex has [actually] free calls inclusive in its packages, so I am uninterested in spending about £11 per month more at TT while they do not reach here with the LLU product.

My main hope of the TalkTalk deal is that it is a sign that other competitive deals will be on the way. Perhaps BT Wholesale and other LLU providers will respond? Maybe instead of recent line rental increases BT could have a new lower landline rental for broadband (and VoIP) without an ordinary phone?

Martin, its also worht noting that those considering TT should sign-up using QUIDCO (I'm not sure what the other cashback sites offer). I'm tracking a payment of £40 (£20 for the tel line and £20 for the broadband) - which more than covers the £30 TT sign-up cost and the £5 that QUIDCO takes per year.

Martin - could you ask Talk Talk why they don't allow you to delay taking the landline until they can offer the broadband? The way they've structured it, I'll be on their £10 a month tarrif by the end of April, but won't get broadband until end June - that's an extra £20 they're getting from me for free as I'm on Primustel at the moment.
  • Those considering signing up for Talktalk should do a search of Talktalk on these very forums to check out the lack of customer service, etc. Also, check the Talktalk forum on http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=talktalk

Tech support at 50p a minute..... There's so much wrong with this particular company. It's really not worth the hassle.

I wouldn't touch this offer with a barge pole having been with talktalk. Firstly 18 months is an awful long time to be with some-one that you grow to dislike because of the way they behave, their customer service was awful, taking days to reply to emails, it took nearly a month for them to realize that I had left them and I had cancelled my direct debit. Calls to tech support are expensive. If they couldn't handle their existing customer base, how are they going to manage when all the people who join, (who will of course have carefully read and appreciated the small print in the Terms and Conditions and who will be willing or able to pay the (£70, I think) fee to terminate their contract early) seduced by the offer of 'free' broadband. As they say oop North, you don't get owt for nowt and I say, you get what you pay for, if the broadband drops out, well it's free isn't it. I have chosen to go with an ISP that offers a month by month contract, real unlimited downloads (unlike talktalk who restrict certain types of downloads) and who have just upped the nominal download speed to 8 MB at no extra cost

Ouch - my tech support is effectively free in the 500 minutes they gave me, so I can forgive them sometimes not answering straightaway
