David Lidington wants a freeze on controversial NI legislation
|
The Conservative Party has called for a seven-month freeze on controversial measures on education and local government in Northern Ireland.
This should happen until it is clear if the government's attempt to restore powersharing has been successful or not, the party's David Lidington said.
Pushing ahead with legislation will not help to encourage local politicians to take over the reins of power, he added.
Mr Lidington was speaking on BBC Radio Ulster's Inside Politics programme.
The legislation he was referring to include the cutting of Northern Ireland's council's from 26 to seven and the decision to abolish selection in post-primary education.
