What does the Future Hold for the UUP?

Permalink 10:07:42 pm, Categories: Northern Ireland, Politics, Election 2005, 244 words

RECENT public declarations by senior (and some not so senior) members of the Ulster Unionist Party that they will be backing Jimmy Spratt and other DUP candidates rather than those from their own party have been seen as the death knell in the coffin of the Ulster Unionist Party. Indeed it's hardly something that can be seen as in any way good. But is it really the end?

[More:]

With Lord Molyneaux and outgoing MP Martin Smyth (among others) backing Jimmy 'Splitter' Spratt in South Belfast, against the UUP's Michael McGimpsey, the Belfast Telegraph are now saying that with a split unionist vote, the SDLP's Allisdair McDonnell could sneak through and take the Westminster seat. Should this happen, who will the people blame? The Ulster Unionists for failing to select a candidate that could unite the unionist vote? Or the DUP for deliberately splitting the vote for their own selfish partisan interests?

Lord Molyneax has also backed former UUP MP Jeffrey Donaldson, now standing for the DUP in Lagan Valley. With even the prospect of party leader David Trimble's Upper Bann seat being under threat, how many seats can the Ulster Unionists hold in this election?

They should be fairly safe in South Antrim with David Burnside, and on a good day David Trimble, Lady Sylvia Hermon (North Down) and Michael McGimpsey could win. If all 4 do, David Trimble may well retain his leadership. Anything less and he will be in deep, deep trouble.

are the alliance not running in both Upper Bann and North Down this time? With Bob McCartney not running in North Down there is a good chance the DUP could take it. In Upper Bann last time Trimble depended on SDLP votes and no alliance party running. The Alliance are running this time and the SDLP voters cant afford to give Trimble any votes so his 2,000 majority is looking incredibly wafer thin.

I dont think it is the end of the UUP though. hopefully they'll take a beating and go and examine why the electorate have rejected them yet again. there is still very much a role for the UUP who have for a century been the standard bearers of unionism. If they came up with a more consistent policy and were tough on SF/IRA when they are the main party, instead of just when they realise their losing voters then id be more emcouraged to vote UUP. as it is i believe they are to blame for their own current position with their inconsistencies

Martin Smyth has consistantly opposed the Belfast Agreement and Mc Gimsey is not a fit successor . Thank you D.U.P. for providing Jimmy Spratt whose policies are those of Martin Smyth. He will get my vote.

Ok, say the UUs had opposed the GFA. What would have happened, do you think, in intervening decade between then and now?

If SF weren't negotiating, but instead had the IRA blowing things up. Do you think Northern Ireland would be in a better or worse condition?

The pro-agreement unionists gave SF a chance to play nice. We watched SF prove that they were unable to do that and only because of that can unionists now claim the moral high ground.

If the IRA had ceased hostilities and the unionists still refused to negotiate - who would be in the wrong?

They did the right thing by giving it a go and Northern Ireland is a better place because of it. Just because the GFA failed doesn't mean it wasn't worth a shot. The DUP certainly seem to think so, since their agreement was basically a re-hashed GFA, ceding yet more concessions to Sinn Fein / the IRA.

Right now, since all unionists agree that power sharing is a no go in the short-medium term, there is little to choose between the Unionist parties on constitutional issues.
