Everything Ulster Guide to Voting on 5th May

Permalink 09:34:28 pm, Categories: Northern Ireland, Politics, Election 2005, 242 words

I was listening to Newsline on BBC One Northern Ireland earlier whilst making my dinner in the kitchen and heard them start to talk about the actual process for the voting tomorrow. It made me think that maybe I should do a quick recap of how the voting system will work as EU's contribution - a public service responsibility if you will.

[More:]

I then thought - forget it. If you can't follow what are essentially simple instructions, then you don't deserve to vote. Too many stupid people in the world have the vote and I think that's one of the fundamental flaws inherent in democracy.

Lets be honest, anyone who has taken an interest enough to be reading this site will already know, but for those hypothetical exceptions that prove the rule:

1. Tomorrow you can vote in 2 (that's two) elections

General Election for Westminster
Put an X beside your favourite single candidate

Local Elections for Council
Rank the candidates in order of preference, starting at 1 for your favourite and working your way through 2, 3, 4 etc until you either can't be bothered any more or you run out of candidates.

2. You need to bring some photographic government issued ID (passport, UK Driving Licence/Translink Senior Smartpass or an Electoral Identity Card).

So there you have it - Voting for Dummies.

Disclaimer: This applies to Northern Ireland only. Most areas on the mainland will not have local elections tomorrow.
