Withdrawn Councillor Elected Anyway!

Permalink 01:51:50 pm, Categories: News, Northern Ireland, Politics, Election 2005, 136 words

Ulster Unionist David Archer Junior has been elected to Lisburn City Council despite withdrawing from the race a couple of weeks ago due to a late night "incident" in the council offices.

[More:]

Little information came out about the 'incident' but Mr Archer Jr, a local businessman, said he was resigning 'forthwith' and at the same time withdrew himself from the poll. However it was too late to change the ballot papers, which had already been printed, and it now looks likely that there will be a by-election for his seat.

If the other parties agreed, the UUP could co-opt someone else in his place - but something tells me the DUP will force a by-election, hoping that since they had by far the largest share of the vote with 40%, they could win the seat.

A by-election is the only fair option, as the candidate didnt want to stand before May 5th, weeks before the election

The fairness all depends in whether people voted for individual or party.

Individual? To be fair, only people who voted for him should be given a vote in any by-election, but that's obviously impossible.

Party? Well the UUP won that seat so they should be allowed to replace him with one of their own.

Heard an opionion from a poster on Slugger that it's more likely the UUP will leave the seat empty rather than risk i going to the DUP. To be honest I wouldn't blame them.
