Council Elections - It's not that bad.... is it?

Permalink 09:50:32 pm, Categories: News, Northern Ireland, Politics, Election 2005, 347 words

Finally, all the results from Northern Ireland's council elections are in. I have to admit that despite the DUP's successes on Friday, I wasn't expecting them to do quite so well as they did in the local government election! But fair play to them, congratulations. Now lets take a look at what it really means...

[More:]

The final seat totals are:
DUP 182
SF 126
UUP 115
SDLP 101
Alliance 30
Green Party 3
PUP 2
UUC 2
NRA 1

The BBC have more detailed results although they calculate the difference from 2001 by subtracting the 2001 vote share from the 2005 vote share.

This shows what change has been made to the parties' shares respective to other parties. With the rise of the parties at the extremes of Northern Ireland's political spectrum however, I'm more interested in how the various parties have won/lost out based on their own share (by which I mean their own 2001 share).

Let's see what difference it makes when the increase/decrease in share is calculated as a percentage of each party's own 2001 vote. Perhaps an expert will tell me these calculations are useless, but we'll see...

eg DUP up from 21.4% to 29.6% (8.2% difference) as a percent of 21.4 that's a (8.2/21.4) 38% increase! ie 29.6 ≈ 21.4 x 139%

By my reckoning (and these figures could be wrong), the big 5 line up as follows:
DUP +39%
SF +13%
UUP -22%
SDLP -10%
Alliance -4%

This shows more accurately just how serious the situation is for the Ulster Unionists (and/or how well the DUP campaign has worked). The Unionists, by dropping from 23.2% to 18% haven't just lost 5.2% of the share, they've lost 22% of their share!

Are we getting this? More than one in five people who voted UUP in 2001 chose not to this time! I realise I'm not allowing for turnout but still! This should send a stark wakeup call to Cunningham House - something needs to be done if the party are to have any chance of rectifying this situation next time around.

A revolution is required at CH but I fear all we will witness is the same old arrogance and detachment from the electorate!

I was speaking to a failry senior UUP MLA a few days ago - when I put it to him that root and branch reform was needed to stabilise the UUP's decline he told me I was talking nonsense - "all that's needed is for improved communication" - whatever that means!

I'm afraid Beano - the mesage simply has not sunk in!

That certainly lends credibility to David's theory. I sincerely hope that this MLA's attitude is not prevalent among the majority of the party.

Out of curiosity, by root and branch reform are you referring to party policies or the internal workings of the party itself?

As far as I was aware the UUP was more democratic than the DUP as far as candidate selection was concerned (although I've no idea if procedures even exist for electing a DUP leader).

Both policy and organisation require fundmaental change. The entire party officer team should be sacked - they are the board of directors of UUP Plc - they must pay for the pitiful performances in the last three polls. Anything less than a total purge will represent a continuation of the Trimble-era personalities.

The policy needs to change - but it is very hard to see how the UUP can really score any points off the DUP on this front - they have been totally outflanked and we now occupy the middle ground.

The must critical decision will be the choice of a new leader - I don't think John Taylor or Reg Empey would be suitable as they are far too closely associated with Trimble. Hermon is far from credible.

Really I see no way back for the UUP.

the UUP are effectively finished, and I am a very happy man to see it.
Now we need to consolidate the Unionist electorate behind one party, and as I said before, a commitee of Mcartney, Robinson, burnside, Dodds etc would lead the way forward....

I confess to not knowing much about the Party Officer Team but I'd find it hard to imagine that sacking the lot of them is either necessary or even desirable, although obviously those who remain need a kick up the arse.

I disagree that the DUP have taken up the middle ground. To me they still appear as the political wing of the Free Presbyterian Church. Feel free to point out where exactly they stand on the middle ground though.

As for the leadership, I don't know who best to choose. I think Hermon would be a breath of fresh air and has the personality to carry it off, but she's too left-wing to unite even those who have remained in the party. I guess that one's up to the members to decide.

It will not happen overnight but I think your "no way back" is more wishful thinking than serious contemplation. People were writing off the Conservatives in 1997, and even for years afterwards. I'm sure the UUP will be back, in time.

I never wrote the Tories off after 1997 - I always recognised that they had strong figures who could lead the way back - i.e. Ken Clarke, Michael Howard, Michael Xavier Portillo, Billy Hague etc.

The difficulty facing the UUP is that they are bereft of a credible replacement for Trimble. BTW, this isn't 1805 - a modern political party cannot be led from the House of Lords.

Perhaps the UUP should try a political triumvirate - 1 MP, 1 MEP, 1MLA - as they prepare to rebuild.

In the 1970s the UUP was "in crisis" but it came through.

They are 100 years old - rough and tumble is part of the process - they can make a come back.

(I am NOT a UUP voter!!!!!)

Watch them.

Sorry to burst the bubble but NI councillors (bins, burials and leisure centres) and non-sitting MLAs don't amount to much.

9 MPs out of 656 are easily ignored with a government majority of 66.

and 1 MEP - are you having a laugh? The Northern Ireland MEPs would be a quiet voice in a loud chamber even if they spoke as one. And lets face it that won't happen.
