Fermanagh / South Tyrone: Gildernew Elected

Permalink 05:50:52 pm, Categories: News, Northern Ireland, Politics, Election 2005, 163 words

Michelle Gildernew is back in for Fermanagh South Tyrone with 18,638 votes. At the same time, the DUP's Arlene Foster (14,056 votes) beat Ulster Unionist Tom Elliot (8,869 votes) quite convincingly.

[More:]

Gildernew's taking her time to make her speech, apparently she's pregnant at the minute (poor baby!)

Of course Jim Allistair of the DUP went on to claim the Ulster Unionists were selfish and arrogant because they wouldn't hand the DUP a free run in what was previously an Ulster Unionist seat.

Brid Rogers thinks the SDLP vote went down because people were afraid of a DUP win and voted tactically for Gildernew (swing from SDLP to SF of 4%).

The Ulster Unionist panelist on BBC One blamed the management of his own party for handing this seat to nationalists.

Full result at the BBC.

If nothing else, Gildernew will be happy that she won by more than the fifty-something (57?) votes she won last time thanks to some special all-night opening.
