WEST Belfast was the first constituency to elect an MP in the 2005 election from Northern Ireland. Gerry Adams was elected with 24,000 votes and 70% of the vote (3,000 votes down on 2001 but a 4% increase).
Of course he went on to give his acceptance speech in Irish - the only words I could make out were "Bobby" and "Sands".
There was a 4% swing from SDLP to Sinn Fein and the same 4% swing from the Ulster Unionists to the DUP.
Gerry Adams 24,348 (70%)
Alex Attwood 5,033 (21%)
Diane Dodds 3,652 (11%)
Chris McGimpsey 779 (2%)
Others 733 (2%)
Turnout 65%
