beano's Westminster Election Predictions

Permalink 03:40:02 pm, Categories: Northern Ireland, Politics, Election 2005, 557 words

My predictions through the Westminster Focus series are as follows:

DUP 7 - UUP 4 - SF 5 - SDLP 2

For seat by seat details and analysis as well as BetFair election odds and a free punt on the UK-wide General Election result, read on!

[More:]

East Antrim - Sammy Wilson DUP
East Belfast - Peter Robinson DUP
East Londonderry - Gregory Campbell DUP
Fermanagh & South Tyrone - Michell Gildernew SF
Foyle - Mark Durkan SDLP
Lagan Valley - Jeffrey Donaldson DUP
Mid-Ulster - Martin McGuinness SF
Newry & Armagh - Conor Murphy SF
North Antrim - Ian Paisley DUP
North Belfast - Nigel Dodds DUP
North Down - Lady Sylvia Hermon UUP
South Antrim - David Burnside UUP *
South Belfast - Michael McGimpsey UUP *
South Down - Eddie McGrady SDLP
Strangford - Iris Robinson DUP
West Belfast - Gerry Adams SF
West Tyrone - Pat Doherty SF
Upper Bann - David Trimble UUP *

I have to admit that my results are slightly optimistically biased in favour of the middle-ground and it would take a good day for these results to come through, particularly for Trimble and Durkan, whose seats could easily fall on a bad day. That said I believe these results are well within the realms of possibility, but all the seats I've called for the UUP (with the exception of Lady Hermon's) will be close run things - as illustrated by the asterisks, which I've placed beside predictions where BetFair's punters disagree with me. In fact, I'm tempted to have a punt on the UUP seats myself! One that surprised me is that unlike Trimble, Durkan seems to be the BetFair.com favourite.

The punters at BetFair election odds seem to think the UUP will be all but wiped from the Westminster map (although no bets are being taken on North Down)! Slightly different to what I've predicted. I've listed below the current odds for my predictions at BetFair.
For up to date odds check BetFair election odds under Marginal Seats - NI

If a seat is not listed, no bets are being taken on it. Odds are decimal and include your original stake, example:
E. Antrim - Sammy Wilson 1.07
if you place a £1 bet you will receive 7p winnings + £1 stake = £1.07

East Antrim
Wilson (DUP) 1.07
Beggs (UUP) 1.55
Anyone else 6.0

Fermanagh & S Tyrone
My Candidate: Gildernew (SF) 1.06,
Elliot (UUP) 7.0
Anyone else 2.0

Foyle
Durkan (SDLP) 1.4
McLaughlin (SF) 1.7
Anyone else 6.0

Lagan Valley
Donaldson (DUP) 1.02
B McCrea (UUP) 1.8
Anyone else 6.0

Newry & Armagh
Murphy (SF) 1.02
Bradley (SDLP) 1.55
Anyone else 6.0

South Antrim *
Burnside (UUP) 1.58
W McCrea (DUP) 1.1
Anyone else 11.0

South Belfast *
McGimpsey (UUP) 1.6
McDonnell (SDLP) 1.6
Anyone else 1.1

Strangford
Robinson (DUP) 1.01
G McGimpsey (UUP) 2.0
Anyone else 3.0

Upper Bann *
Trimble (UUP) 2.6
Simpson (DUP) 1.1
Anyone else 6.0

Of course, sorry. I've corrected that. Forgive me, a lot of these articles are posted when I should be concentrating on other things!

I think we are looking at

7 DUP: Current seats plus East Antrim

6 Sinn Fein: Current seats plus Newry/South Armagh and Foyle.

3 UUP: Will lose East Antrim and South Belfast.

2 SDLP: Lose Foyle & Newry/Armagh but pick up South Belfast.

I wish I could be as optimistic as you on the sucess of the "middle" partyies:

DUP 8 (Gain East Antrim, Upper Bann)
SF 6 (gain Newry/South Armagh, Foyle)
UUP 3 (lose East antrim, Upper bann, )
SDLP 1 (Lose Newry/South Armagh & Foyle)

South Belfast is too close to call, but I reckon/hope McGimpsey will take it by a wisker. I'm not usually a UUP man myself, but there has to be some alternative to the unholy alliance of Paisleyism and Republicanism carving up this country between themselves. I voted for the Conservatives in south belfast in 2003, and I would so again if they were standing and the circumstances were different, but for me this is a referendum to keep this country together or to tear it apart.
I'd love to be optimistic, but I'm not.

BTW cheers for keeping this blog going all through the election, it's been a good read. Keep up the good work!

And just so you can't accuse me of not putting my money where my mouth is I've a couple of quid on Trimble to hold his seat (I said I wouldn't bet the farm on it, and believe me I haven't!). I've also used betfair to lay a fiver each on McGimpsey and Burnside if anyone wants to take me up.

dont waste your money, Beano.

My predictions are;
DUP 11, UUP nil points!, Sfira 5, Sdlp, 2.

I think the only chance the UUP have of squirming a seat will be Burnside, or Hermon in North Down.

However, I think the Unionist electorate have had enough of the arrogant and incompetent trimble.
He will lose his seat, South Belfast will go, Burnside will be pushed out, as will Beggs by Wilson, in fact, can anyone give me odds on this possible wipeout?
Beano, do you know of any odds for a UUP whitewash?

Eastwood's are giving 6/1 - good odds if you fancy putting your money where your mouth is ;)

that will do me, I will head over to Ards.

A few quid will be going on, and two savers on hermon and burnside seperately.

The DUP have run a fairly slick campaign - sports injuries aside, which means there should be rich pickings almost everywhere.

Ditto for the shinners.

The SDLP and UUP have nowhere to run to and no-one to represent.

I don't know if either of these two pay people to think about what they are doing because the UUP strategies are crap and the SDLP images are a turn off

Some daft predictions to follow

East Antrim - Wilson
East Belfast - Robinson
East Londonderry - Campbell
Fermanagh & South Tyrone - Gildernew
Foyle - McLaughlin
Lagan Valley - Donaldson
Mid-Ulster - McGuinness
Newry & Armagh - Murphy
North Antrim - Paisley
North Belfast - Kelly
North Down - Hermon
South Antrim - Burnside
South Belfast - Spratt
South Down - Ruane
Strangford - Robinson
West Belfast - Adams
West Tyrone - Doherty
Upper Bann - Simpson

I make that something like

DUP 8 UUP 2 SF 8 SDLP 0
