Ballymena Internment Parade Restricted
The Friends of William Orr Republican Flute Band parade scheduled for 9th August in Ballymena will go ahead, but will do so under conditions set down by the Parades Commission following concerns raised by the unionist community in the town.
The full text of the determination is available from the Parades Commission website.
The most significant restriction is that on the route of the parade.
Follow up:
"The parade is prohibited from entering Cushendall Road, Dunclug Park, Frys Road and Broughshane Road The parade shall assemble as notified in Fisherwick Gardens. It shall proceed to the junction of Fisherwick Gardens and Broughshane Road and at that junction shall turn around to return to the assembly point in Fisherwick Gardens."
Determination made in relation to the Friends of William Orr Republican Flute Band parade notified to take place on Tuesday 9 August 2005
The Parades Commission said that among the considerations involved in reaching this determination, which it believes strikes a balance between the rights of community and individual, were:
- "...if a large scale policing operation is required the disruption to the local community and the possible infringement of protected Convention rights will increase commensurately"
- "the real possibility of damaging community relations with a consequent effect on the likelihood of public disorder should the parade proceed along the entirety of its notified route"
- "This is a non-traditional band parade"
Thanks to stevey2005 for pointing this out.
