Scots Opt Out of Team GB
The Scottish FA have stated they will not join a Great Britain and Northern Ireland football team for the olympics in 2012, despite assurances from Sepp Blatter that their participation would not undermine Scotland's position as a footballing nation and an independent FIFA member.
Follow up:
Great Britain normally doesn't have an olympic team because it doesn't have a single team in the UEFA European Under 21 Championships, the results of which are used to determine who qualifies for the Olympic games (where teams are limited to all but 3 of their players being under 23). However, because London is hosting the games, the team qualifies automatically as hosts.
According to the online report, the FA of Wales are "reconsidering" their initial opposition to the idea, but according to Radio 5 this evening, the other FAs plan to go ahead without Scotland.
It's a shame Scotland don't want to be involved, but I can (kind of) see why. There are countries (including many in Africa I think) who keep raising the issue of the UK having 4 teams for 'one country', and they'd see this as an argument for a UK team (and a single UK FA) to be constituted under FIFA. I'm curious why they feel this is a threat and the IFA (whose brand new website is looking great by the way) don't.
