Westlink Upgrade to Come In Early
Everyone likes some good news once in a while so here it is. On the day when the Grosvenor road junction on the Westlink opened, regional development minister Conor Murphy said the Westlink upgrade might be completed up six months ahead of schedule, which is excellent news for those of us who use the busy road on a regular basis.
Follow up:
I have to say I've been extremely impressed by the way in which this project has been managed, specifically the fact that the construction teams have somehow kept the road open (except for the odd overnight closure in the wee hours) since work began over two years ago. I'm sure this has added months, if not years, to the construction time, but it has stopped Belfast grinding to a complete halt.
There seems to be confusion over exact dates. The BBC report says the road Broadway underpass was due for completion in 2009 and may now be ready this summer. Wesley Johnston's excellent and detailed report on his Northern Ireland Roads site shows the Broadway junction as the last item scheduled to be completed (Q3 2009) and makes it appear that if this was finished by summer, the whole project should be done by Q4 this year. Maybe they've done a bit of juggling or are just allowing for slippage, but either way it's still good news.
