EU Quote of the Day 21/05/08
It's been a while (6 months, apparently) since I did a quote of the day but I've just been directed to Charlie Brooker's blog at the Guardian's Comment is Free and after reading a few paragraphs I knew I'd find a soundbite worth passing on to EU readers, so here goes.
"we're all led to believe we're somehow unique and important, that we have a destiny, that we matter in some way. But this doesn't add up. There are billions of us. An infinite swarm of haircuts and anuses, that's humankind for you. We can't all be "special". The vast majority of us are meaningless energy blips, and we'd do well to remember the fact. Maybe if we saw ourselves as merely part of the herd (which is, after all, what we are), we'd be more inclined to work together to solve the planet's problems."

Under the direction of the undoubtedly special guardian staff ;>
People who try to convince you your a sheep always think themselves Sheppards. The arrogance and elitism of this opinion illustrates a basic lack of empathy or even recognition of commonality between the author and his fellows in society.
It is the perfect sound bite for a modern superficial individualism that finds its gratification in egotism, disparagement and ultimately, given the social nature of the creature, the desire to impose on others of what the imbecile finds gratifying to its individual tastes. The expression of such an opinion contradicts the substance of its proposal, as to form this vertex opinion on your fellows you must regard yourself as an exception, otherwise how did you achieve this higher understand of the general merit of those around you ?
All human beings have an individual consciousness and are special. They may not be special in the eyes of other or in the opinions of others on their achievements, but to suggest that this should render them a mere unit - under the quantification of those who, often for no discernable reason, to thing themselves special- is highly, highly degrading to us all and has, as a political philosophy, been responsible for tragedies (of utilitarianism) the privileged pup at the guardian must surely be aware of.
Hah. I like it!
