UUP Councillor Defects Over "UVF Link"

Categories: News, Northern Ireland, Loyalists, Local Government, UVF Another twist in the shacking up of the UUP and PUP in Stormont has seen 25 year old Ulster Unionist party officer and Down councillor Peter Bowles is defecting to the Conservatives in protest over the party's new links to the UVF. As well as becoming the first Ulster Unionist to defect, he will also become the Conservatives' only current elected representative in Northern Irleand.
Interestingly Bowles has chosen a party that has traditionally struggled to attract votes in Northern Ireland over the 'easy option' of joining unionist rivals in the DUP. I for one hope it pays off.

I am from the mainland and a supporter of Northern Ireland being within the United Kingdom but I do think one of the main weak points about the DUP and the UUP is that these are NI-only parties and what a Unionist party needs to do is to stand everywhere throughout the United Kingdom so this news is good. It must weaken Sinn Fein/IRA propaganda against NI that there are Unionist representatives from the mainland that have been elected in NI.

I cant see either the DUP or UUP getting many votes in the mainland,but do agree with your point of weakening the sinn fein/ira stance!!
I think the unioist parties need to unite here in NI, that would be a start, before fielding candidates across the water

I personally cant see Peter Bowles helping the Conservatives gain many more votes in NI, if he did they'd be more personal votes, not votes directed to the party!
