Shock: Local Politicians "Tribal"
You'd scarcely credit it but Sinn Fein's Alex Maskey is fuming with Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde and is demanding an apology after the chief of police allegedly claimed the policing board had "gone a bit tribal".
Supposedly Orde accused the elected members of being more interested in political debate than policing issues. Frankly, I suspect describing the debate as "political" was being generous.
Follow up:
"I get more strategic questions, I have to say, from my junior officers than I do currently from the Police Board. Because the Police Board's gone a bit tribal at the moment."
Sir Hugh Orde, Chief Constable of the PSNI
Does anyone doubt what he's saying? Does anyone not sympathise with him? Given their behaviour in the past I'd be more surprised if they weren't using their positions to score party-political points (even when there isn't really a public audience to award them).
Sir Hugh probably should have politely suggested that his bosses on the Policing Board focus more on strategic policing issues, but plenty of folk have been telling them to stop acting like children for decades. The problem is their bosses, the electorate, keep rewarding them for doing it!
