'Historic' IRA Statement "Ends Armed Campaign"
Yep folks, that moment you've all been waiting for. No, not lunchtime, I'm just finished thanks.
The provisional IRA have stated that they're ending the "armed campaign" (read terrorist bloodfest) that they forced on this country for 35 years. Isn't that nice?
It's not really news, since we've all known it was coming since Gerry Adams' election speech historic statement, but nonetheless expect reems of coverage on the evening news tonight.
"The leadership of Óglaigh na hÉireann [I think that translates literally as Army of Ireland - but they mean the IRA] has formally ordered an end to the armed campaign."
They were supposed to do this years ago, but better late than never. Now we've come to realise over the past few years that words from the IRA are often meaningless, so you'll forgive me if I wait for actions rather than words. No mention the photographs that the DUP wanted to see - that'll keep Big Ian happy anyway, an excuse to play for more time. Not that I blame him for being sceptical, we all know Sinn Fein's IRA have lied before and will likely lie again, just the photo was a bit of a red herring.
One thing I'll be interested to see is how much of a surge there is in membership of the "dissident" flavours of IRA. I can only urge loyalists not to give folk any excuse to join up. The IRA are, possibly rightly, worried about attacks on republican areas. Don't give the militant fringes in these areas an excuse to dominate or we'll all pay the price.
The full statement is on page 2.

Óghlaigh means young warriors and has been used for a long time in the sense of Volunteer - but applies only to military volunteers.
The legitimate army of the 26 counties (or whatever you wish to call the jurisidction I live in) also (rarely) uses the term.
Amen to that! I hope we all see the actions (and the lack of other actions).
From far south where I am, I'd be worried about the open UVF activity at the moment, considering that was one of the factors which started the troubles.
The Republic's military has the term on their website in the heading banner. Óglaigh na hÉireann is alive and kicking - although whether Ireland's army was ever 'kicking' is open to question.
Glad to see you back by the way Aonghus
(because its really going to be 'Republican heros make peace - Saint Gerry most positive force in Irish history')
If This Works Out It Will Be Wonderful, but conveince rather than repentance suggests to me otherwise.
I expect an open Europe and America wide I.R.A. love fest to ensue very soon-
and the only justice or security we'll get is the fact that the criminal has finished his crime.
It is probably a sign of how cynical I've become, that I'm not convinced this is true.
They (Sf & IRA) have shown that they're not too bothered about the suffering of their own community IF the movement as a whole gains from it. Think of the PR value of a loyalist attack on one of the smaller ghettoes like Short Strand- the money would start rolling back in again from deluded Irish Americans.
Like you Beano, with the events since the GFA I'm very sceptical about the goodwill of the republican movement.I hope the events over the next few months prove me wrong.
The IRA are not blameless victims. There was discrimination against Catholics, there was even (to a lesser degree) discrimination against protestants. But neither happened to an extent that justified a 30 year campaign of murder and destruction.
Everyone dismisses the Real IRA and Continuity IRA at the minute - but the provisionals were originally dissidents too.
Ahh, the truth that so many fail to understand.
You should post this exact statement on Slugger.
Oh, I hadn't gone away, you know. But not being a Northerner, I tend not to comment on things I know too little about.
Well so far responses from senior politicians haven't been entirely unpredictable. The governments are practically throwing a party for Gerry and the Widowmakers, Peter Hain warns Unionists not to doubt the sincerity of his buddies in the IRA or else t...
I think releasing sean kelly was just the start of more concessions to please sinn fein...

And now, amnesty for the on-the-runs. It's disgusting, truly disgusting.
Whats next to please them???
As pointed out earlier on EU and already blogged elsewhere the Romeo 12 watchtower in South Armagh's bandit country is being dismantled as I type. It seems little has changed for our Tony-appointed lord and master Peter Hain since his days in the "Troo...
The ever-aware Northern Irish Magyar (known as Paul here at Everything Ulster) has discovered, tucked away in a dark corner of the internet, the first draft of last week's IRA statement.
You can see a little work was done to transform it from draft ...
